Will Keegan Bradley Dominate the Masters with Mental Golf

Can 25-year-old Keegan Bradley win at Augusta? You know Bradley. He’s the guy that won at the first major he played in, the 2011 PGA Championship (last August). That puts him in the record books, alongside Francis Ouimet and Ben Curtis (that’s right it only happened two other times in history). He’s also named the PGA Tour 2011 rookie of the year. But will Keegan Bradley dominate the Masters with mental golf?

Phil Mickelson voices his opinion about Bradley’s accomplishment of winning in his first major:

“It’s a really impressive feat for him to do that […] That type of mental focus is something that you can’t really teach. He just kind of has it. He has that ability to perform under the clutch […] He just knows how to do what he has to do to get a win or to get up there. I just have a lot of respect for his game. I think he’s going to do very well and compete strongly this year at Augusta.”

Tiger Woods also weighed in his thoughts:

“That’s pretty impressive, isn’t it?’ […] To come out of the blocks in your first time […] That’s what’s amazing to me is that he was able to play that well for the first time he’s ever been there. He handled the situation fantastically […]”

Emily Kay, writer for the Boston Examiner, refers to what ESPN commentators have to say about their expectations for Bradley at the Masters:

Curtis Strange: “I think a guy who has game because of his length…a young guy like Keegan Bradley, if he can get lucky, can be a guy that could be there come late Sunday afternoon.”

Paul Azinger would put his money on the graduate of Hopkinton (Mass.) High and St. John’s University, who won the first major he entered and will be competing in his maiden Masters. “I think Keegan Bradley is the guy who has the best chance,” he said. “Who won the last major that’s been played? It was Keegan Bradley. I like the look in his eye when he plays. He just seems like he goes into this zone mentally.

“Really in the end it’s can they handle Augusta National the first time? Who’s the least intimidated by their surroundings?” Azinger summed up. “Keegan just looks to me like…he’s the best new young player….He’s even created a bit of a gap. He seems to be in contention every week.”

What’s the common theme here? Mental Golf… Mickelson said (referring to Bradley’s mental game): “That type of mental focus is something that you can’t really teach. He just kind of has it.” And Paul Azinger mentioned that Bradley “just seems like he goes into this zone mentally.” So I’m asking: Will Keegan Bradley dominate the Masters with mental golf?

You see, to really come out ahead in your first major, you need to be able to block out any tension. You think it’s easy? It ain’t.
